25 November marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. This day also marks the launch of the global “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” campaign, which will run until 10 December. During this period, governments, international and non-governmental organisations, civil society and communities join efforts to raise awareness of gender-based violence and to strengthen action to combat it.
The Council of Europe firmly upholds the right of every woman and girl to live free from fear, in safety and dignity. No woman should live in fear of violence, the Council of Europe Secretary General stressed in hіs statement.
Women’s rights are human rights. The Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence (the Istanbul Convention) is a key instrument in the fight against violence against women and domestic abuse. The Convention provides a roadmap for building effective protection systems, preventing violence and ensuring accountability for perpetrators. The Istanbul Convention saves lives.
The Council of Europe Office in Ukraine joins the commemoration of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and the “16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence” campaign by displaying the colour orange – the campaign's colour, symbolising a bright, violence-free future.
Within its project “Combating violence against women in Ukraine – Phase III” (COVAW-III), the Council of Europe continues to support Ukraine in developing effective policies to prevent and counter violence against women and domestic violence, as well as promoting gender equality in line with the standards of the Istanbul Convention.
