On 12–14 June 2026, a three-day training was held for lecturers of leading law faculties in Ukraine, devoted to the integration of Council of Europe standards, the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights, Council of Europe HELP courses, interactive teaching methods, and the responsible use of digital and AI tools in legal education. The event aimed to strengthen universities’ capacity to foster in students a deeper understanding of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law.
Participants focused on discussing how up-to-date curricula can promote these values, and in mixed working groups they carried out “mapping” of Council of Europe standards within existing courses. Separate sessions addressed the specifics of teaching the European Convention on Human Rights and the Court’s case-law, the use of HELP resources, as well as the opportunities and risks related to the use of artificial intelligence in the academic environment.
The programme included contributions from judges of the European Court of Human Rights and the Constitutional Court of Ukraine, experts of the Council of Europe and the OSCE Support Programme for Ukraine, as well as practical sessions on developing individual and institutional action plans for incorporating European standards into day-to-day teaching practice. Based on the outcomes of the training, participants outlined further steps for co‑operation and for consolidating a community of lecturers committed to modernising legal education in line with Council of Europe standards.
Participants familiarised themselves with the Council of Europe’s HELP courses and the possibilities for using them to improve education in the field of human rights. HELP courses can be integrated as parts of academic disciplines or as supplementary materials, a form of independent work for students, or a tool for professional development of lecturers.
The event is organised by the Council of Europe Projects "Support to Ukraine in the Implementation of Council of Europe Standards on the Judiciary" and “HELP (Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals) for Ukraine including during wartime”, Phase II, in cooperation with OSCE Support Programme for Ukraine within the framework of the project “Advancing the Quality of Justice by Empowering the Supreme Court’s Role in Delivering Transparent, Accountable and Inclusive Justice".
