On 19 June, more than 30 lecturers participated in the scientific and practical round table “Development of Medical Law as an Academic Discipline: Innovations, Challenges and European Integration Perspectives”, held in Lviv. During the event, the Council of Europe HELP courses “Key Human Rights Principles in Biomedicine” and “Mental Health and Human Rights” were presented.
Representatives of 18 higher medical and legal education institutions from different regions of Ukraine shared their experience in integrating medical law courses into academic curricula and highlighted practices in teaching medical law, pharmaceutical law, and related specialised courses in both medical and legal higher education institutions.
The event was organised by the Council of Europe Project “HELP (Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals) for Ukraine, including during wartime”, the Human Rights and Biomedicine Division of the Council of Europe, in cooperation with the Department of Medical Law of Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University.
Professor Iryna Seniuta, Doctor of Law and Head of the Department of Medical Law at Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University, presented the national adaptations of the HELP courses “Key Human Rights Principles in Biomedicine” and “Mental Health and Human Rights”.
The event also featured presentations on the Council of Europe HELP Platform and the Council of Europe Project “HELP (Human Rights Education for Legal Professionals) for Ukraine, including during wartime”. In addition, Laurence Lwoff, Head of the Human Rights and Biomedicine Division of the Council of Europe, and Aurélie Pasquier, Project Manager of the Division, provided an overview of the Council of Europe’s activities in the field of human rights protection in biomedicine and healthcare and relevant HELP courses.
Participants exchanged teaching experiences, identified good practices for implementation in their institutions, strengthened professional cooperation, and were offered the opportunity to further enhance their expertise through participation in HELP tutored course “Key Human Rights Principles in Biomedicine”, which is scheduled to be launched in September 2026.
