Congratulatory message from Mr Maciej Janczak, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine, on the 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s accession to the Council of Europe:
“30 years ago, Ukraine joined the Council of Europe, starting a new chapter in its history.
Since then, Ukraine has made significant progress on the path toward democracy, human rights, and the rule of law.
It has implemented important reforms and gained candidate status for joining the European Union.
The Council of Europe has always stood by its side on this journey, and we will continue this work.
Especially now, as Ukraine resists Russia’s war of aggression, defending not only its independence but also democratic values.
All these years, the Council of Europe Office has been working diligently in Ukraine, implementing projects across a wide range of areas.
Supporting democracy, local governance, and youth policies, building independent media, fighting corruption, reforming justice and law enforcement bodies, protecting the rights of women and national minorities, as well as children, LGBT people, and persons with disabilities.
Since the start of Russia's aggressive war against Ukraine in 2022, new challenges have emerged.
Supporting veterans, investigating war crimes, cybersecurity, protecting internally displaced persons, as well as those who have left abroad or are returning to Ukraine.
The Council of Europe Office sincerely congratulates Ukraine on the 30th anniversary of its accession to our Organisation.
We are here in Ukraine to support your progress.
