Business, AI and environmental protection: Ukrainian students join Council of Europe HELP courses on human rights

More than 60 students of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv started three Council of Europe HELP tutored courses on 20 October 2026, covering European human rights standards in business, artificial intelligence and environmental protection.

Vadym Popko, Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs (International Cooperation) of Kyiv Taras Shevchenko National University said: “This knowledge will help our students become better and more responsible professionals who not only understand European standards in these fields but also know how to apply them in practice.”

Welcoming the participants, Valentina Falco, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine, highlighted the role of the Council of Europe’s HELP Programme in fostering the practical implementation of European human rights standards by training legal professionals and, increasingly, university students. Ukraine currently has more users of the HELP eLearning Platform than any other Council of Europe member State, almost 30,000.

The three HELP courses address important and evolving areas of human rights protection. “Business and Human Rights” explores the relationship between business activities and human rights protection. “Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights” examines the human rights implications of emerging technologies and the application of relevant European standards. “The Environment and Human Rights” focuses on the links between environmental protection and human rights obligations.

The courses will run from 20 October to 15 December 2026. Over eight weeks, students will deepen their understanding of European human rights standards and see how they work in different legal contexts.

The three courses are freely available in self-learning format on the CoE HELP e-learning platform: “Artificial Intelligence and Human Rights” (6 hours), “Business and Human Rights” (6hours), “The Environment and Human Rights” (6 hours).

To access HELP courses the users need to create the account at the HELP Platform. Upon completion of the course the participants will receive an electronic ‘Statement of accomplishment’.

The project HELP for Ukraine is implemented within the framework of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine “Resilience, Recovery and Reconstruction” 2023–2026.
