The European Day of Languages celebrates its 26th edition under the slogan “Languages unite!”. Since its launch in 2001 at the Council of Europe’s initiative, together with the European Commission, the Day has been celebrated every year all over Europe. It promotes linguistic diversity and plurilingualism as powerful means of fostering intercultural understanding and as essential components of Europe’s rich cultural heritage. The European Centre for Modern Languages based in Graz, Austria, a unique part of the Council of Europe promoting excellence and innovation in language teaching, oversees more than 1,500 celebratory events that will take place around that date all over Europe to mark the European Day of Languages, including the following:
- 22 September, Edinburgh, the UK: a conference “What’s changing in Scotland’s languages curriculum?”
- 25 September, Graz, Austria: the Graz language festival that will be opened by the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Petra Bayr
- 25 September, Belgrade, Serbia: an event in Belgrade in six locations for more than 1,000 students, bringing together 27 countries and organisations, jointly organised by the EUNIC Serbia Cluster, the EU Delegation of the European Union to Serbia and the Council of Europe Office in Belgrade
- 26 September, Guadeloupe, France: an event “One island, different languages / Une île, différentes langues”
