The workshop on community media was held in Kyiv

Workshop "Community media: European practices and Ukrainian reality" was held on 26 April 2017 in Kyiv. More than 25 representatives from local media outlets, media experts and representatives of the Parliament Committee on freedom of speech and information policy participated in the event.

During the workshop, participants discussed legislative regulation and distinctive features of community media in Europe.

Dr. Gosztonyi Gergely, Council of Europe expert (Hungary), noticed that more than 115 countries all over the world have established community media along with public and commercial broadcasting companies. He pointed out that community media is a way to give citizens an opportunity to participate in public life, strengthen social cohesion and intercultural dialogue.

The draft law "On principles of broadcasting of territorial communities in Ukraine" was registered in December 2016. If the law be adopted, it will create a legal framework to reform communal TV and Radio as well as establish new community media. Along with positive changes, the draft law has some provisions that should be discussed and improved. The purpose of the workshop was to discuss possible ways to improve the above-mentioned legislation.

The workshop was organized within the project "Freedom of Media in Ukraine", implemented in the framework of the European Union and the Council of Europe Partnership for Good Governance programme.
