UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List: Mining Historical Heritage (2007) (whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/5139)
Description
The Río Tinto Foundation aims to preserve and restore the historical-artistic and environmental local heritage, also by managing the Riotinto Mining Park for cultural, tourist and recreational purposes.
The Riotinto Mining Park was Europe's largest open cast mine. Guided tours are offered for the Peña de Hierro, the 19th century residential area of Bella Vista (Victorian-style house No. 21). Parts of the old narrow-gauge line are restored, enabling the operation of a historic visitor train. The building of the former company hospital hosts now a Mining Museum (Museo Mineiro) illustrating the history of the mining area of Río Tinto.
The Riotinto Mining Park is an Anchor Point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage.
