The public presentation of the Routard Guide dedicated to the Pyrenean Freedom Routes, certified as Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe, took place on 6 November 2025 in Toulouse, France. The event brought together numerous national, regional, and local public authorities, as well as cultural sector actors from France, Spain, Andorra, and Portugal.

The presentation was held at the Musée du Castelet, a symbolic site along the routes, which served as a prison for many resistance fighters during the Second World War. Speakers paid tribute to the creators of the routes, in particular Madame Josette Durrieu, manager of the routes and honorary senator of France, for her commitment to promoting the values of courage and solidarity embodied by these historic paths.

The dedicated Routard Guide facilitates the discovery of these routes by providing detailed itineraries, practical information, and historical and cultural reference points.

During the event, the Council of Europe was represented by Ms. Despina Chatzivassiliou, Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, and Mr. Rui Gomes, Executive Secretary of EPA and Director of the European Institute of Cultural Routes. In his speech, Rui Gomes highlighted the exceptional contribution of these routes to the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme, particularly through the combination of democratic memory work, intangible heritage, and natural heritage.

The Pyrenean Freedom Routes trace the paths taken by resistance fighters and refugees fleeing Nazi and fascist persecution. They combine historical memory with cultural and natural heritage, offering visitors a unique and immersive experience that highlights the solidarity and courage of those who traveled these paths, as well as those who helped them in their quest for freedom.
