CPT participates in webinar to examine Scotland’s progress in preventing ill-treatment in places of detention

On 25 August 2021, the CPT’s President, Alan Mitchell, and the Head of delegation for the CPT’s visits to Scotland (United Kingdom) in 2018 and 2019, Julia Kozma, participated in a webinar with criminal justice practitioners and academics to discuss a report by the Scottish subgroup of the UK National Preventive Mechanism: Scotland’s progress in the prevention of ill-treatment in places of detention.

The report assesses progress made since the CPT’s visits to Scotland in 2018 and 2019. The CPT’s 2018 visit examined the situation of persons in various Scottish prisons, paying specific attention to women prisoners and those prisoners in segregation and on remand and to overall healthcare issues. It also looked at the situation of persons in police custody. In 2019, the CPT carried out a follow-up visit focused on the use of segregation and mental health care for women prisoners, notably in Cornton Vale Prison.
