Austria hands over chairmanship to Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan took over from Austria the Chairmanship of the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers for a period of six months beginning on 14 May.

On 6 May in Vienna, at the end of the 124th session of the Committee of Ministers, the outgoing Chair, Sebastian Kurz, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Austria, gave an overview of his country's achievements during its chairmanship. Elmar Mammadyarov, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, then presented the priorities of his country’s chairmanship.

Back Secretary General Jagland and Austrian Foreign Minister Kurz on joint mission to Kiev

Council of Europe Secretary General Thorbjørn Jagland and Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz visit Kiev on Monday for talks with the acting government and civil society.

They met with the Prime Minister Arseniy Yatseniuk and the Acting President Oleksandr Turchynov. They discussed measures of legal assistance to Ukraine in the current crisis. The Council of Europe offers its expertise in the areas of human rights, in particular those of minorities, the establishment of an International Advisory Panel to oversee investigations into recent acts of violence in Ukraine and legal advice towards new legislation, constitutional and electoral reform.
