3rd Meeting of the Expert Group on Drug Policies and Human Rights: Self-assessment tool

On Friday, 22.01.2021 the Secretariat hosted the 3rd Meeting of the Expert Group on Drug Policies and Human Rights which was held in the format of an online conference. This working group aims to provide a better understanding of how human rights affect drug policies and how member states can promote more effective and humane drug policies by integrating international standards and guidelines. The work of the experts thus focuses on the elaboration and design of a concept for a practically applicable self-assessment tool put at the disposal of governments and other relevant drug policy stakeholders. This way member States will be better equipped to understand of how human rights affect drug policies and in which way unintended effects and adverse consequences of drug policy responses can be avoided or reduced. The working group brings together experts from 12 countries and cooperated with the CoE Department for the Execution of Judgements, as well as the input form the CPT and European Social Charter Secretariats. During their 3rd meeting, the experts elaborated in more detail the scope, purpose and practical application of the tool and identified concrete assessment criteria.
