The Bar Association of Montenegro has recently launched public consultations on the draft of the revised Code of Professional Conduct of Lawyers.

The draft Code of Professional Ethics of Lawyers was prepared with the support of the action "Accountability and professionalism in the judicial system of Montenegro" which is part of the joint programme of the European Union and the Council of Europe "Horizontal Facility for Western Balkans and Turkey 2019-2022".

The original Code dates from 1999 and was therefore adopted under a different political and legal situation. As such, the intention is to align the revised Code with the key principles of the Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE), best practices of several Council of Europe member states and the existing legal framework for the work of lawyers in Montenegro.

The public consultations aim to encourage lawyers and associate lawyers, as well as the general public, to engage in the discussion, comment and give concrete proposals and on the Draft Code of Professional Ethics of Lawyers. Based on the outcome of the consultations, the working group of the Bar Association will propose the final text of the Code and submit it to the Steering Committee and Assembly of the Association for adoption.

The Draft Code is available at the web page of the Bar Association of Montenegro.
