Global Education activities in second semester of 2016

In the framework of the iLegend, the new Grant Agreement signed with the European Commission for the next three years, the North-South Centre is ready to initiate its activities in the field of Global Education (GE) planned for this period.

The North-South Centre Global Education plan of activities, based on the Zagreb Global Education Congress strategic recommendations, and following the UN Sustainable Development Goal's monitoring process, will cover three dimensions: policy-development, capacity-building, awareness-raising and networking.

The highlights of this plan of activities will be the GE regional seminars (Balkan, Baltic, Visegrad and South-East Europe and Mediterranean countries); the eLearning and residential GE training scheme; the sharing of practices though the online resource centre and through the Global Education Week network. The Global Education Guidelines (first published in 2008 and revised in 2012) which serves as the pedagogical framework for NSC activities, and has been translated in 15 languages so far, will be updated in order to incorporate last pedagogical development in the field and include content related to interreligious dialogue competences.

The North-South Centre will continue to privilege its partnership approach at European and international level, through its participation in the DEAR Multistakeholder Group and though a complementary approach and close follow-up of UNESCO Global Citizenship Education programme and the monitoring of the Sustainable Development Goals target 4.7, ensure that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development, through education for sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles, human rights, gender equality, promotion of a culture of peace and non-violence, global citizenship and appreciation of cultural diversity and of culture’s contribution to sustainable development.

In the coming months, the NSC, in partnership with its local partners (Global Education Week national coordinators) will organise the two first regional seminars, for the Baltic and for the South-East Europe and Mediterranean countries in October and November respectively. These seminars will bring together decision makers and practitioners from formal and non-formal education sectors to discuss the implementation of the Zagreb Congress strategic recommendations from a regional perspective and tackle issues at stake.

As to its capacity-building dimension, the NSC will organise its first residential training of trainers of this new cycle, in the framework of its the University on Youth & Development, in Mollina, Spain between the 20 and the 23 of September. This annual training will be complemented by six yearly eLearning courses covering the following topics: Human Rights, Intercultural Dialogue and Democratic Citizenship.

The forthcoming Global Education Week, taking place from the 12-20 November under the theme “Acting Together for a World of Peace” will encourage awareness raising activities, networking and sharing of practice among practitioners from formal and non-formal educational settings. The GEW acts as a kick-off event to boost networking and sharing of practices all year round.

Recently, in its intent to reach a broader and more diverse public, GE has reached Chinese audience with the translation of the Global Education Guidelines in simplified and traditional Chinese.
