The Council of Europe organised a webinar on conflict-related sexual violence for judges and prosecutors

On 28 November 2022, in cooperation with the National School of Judges of Ukraine (NSJU), the Council of Europe organised a webinar on conflict-related sexual violence. While the event primarily targeted judges of the first and appellate courts instances, prosecutors of the War Crimes Department of the Office of the Prosecutor General, representatives of the Prosecutors’ Training Centre of Ukraine and representatives of the NSJU also participated in the webinar (overall 39 participants: 24 – female, 15 – male).

The main objective of the event was to present and discuss methodological recommendations for judges regarding consideration of cases on conflict-related sexual violence. The methodological recommendations were developed in cooperation with the NSJU with the support of the Council of Europe. During the webinar, the participants increased their knowledge on the international and legal standards applicable to cases involving conflict-related sexual violence. They also improved their understanding of the modalities of work with the evidence obtained during investigation of this type of crime. In course of the webinar special attention was paid to the drafting of procedural documents and their main elements during consideration of cases on conflict-related sexual violence.

The webinar was organised within the framework of the Council of Europe Project “Human Rights Compliant Criminal Justice System in Ukraine”, which is part of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine 2018-2022.
