The Intercultural city aims at building its policies and identity on the explicit acknowledgement that diversity can be a resource for the development of the society.

The first step is the adoption (and implementation) of strategies that facilitate positive intercultural encounters and exchanges, and promote equal and active participation of residents and communities in the development of the city, thus responding to the needs of a diverse population. The Intercultural integration policy model is based on extensive research evidence, on a range of international legal instruments, and on the collective input of the cities member of the Intercultural Cities programme that share their good practice examples on how to better manage diversity, address possible conflicts, and benefit from the diversity advantage.

This section offers examples of intercultural approaches that facilitate the development and implementation of intercultural strategies.

This initiative was implemented together and with the grant support from the Association of Municipalities of the Netherlands. The modern space ART-territory "All Yours" has become a place for many active organizations in the city of Pavlograd working with unemployed migrants (age group 18 to 60).

The ART-territory offers a great choice of innovative forms of work – brainstorming sessions on actual city or society issues, creative exhibitions, learning of different traditions, family readings and other forms of family leisure, music and art activities – that indeed contribute to building a united community with a good degree of reciprocity and mutual understanding between the city residents and newcomers. Based on the target audience’s needs (mainly IDPs and locals), that were mapped before the project implementation, the ART-territory "All Yours" activities are mainly organized around three key axes:

  • Relax space "We are together"
  • Art Space "Warmth”
  • Advisory service "E-services"

This initiative has revived the creative connectivity between the locals and IDPs and even helped to even mitigate some conflicts.

Since its launch in July 2017, more than 79 events were organized (roundtable meetings, master classes, trainings, festivals, etc.). Business classes conducted in the ART-territory have already produced some results - some IDP participants started their own business by now.
