Tigran Petrosian

The world history of chess entails only a dozen individuals because grandmasters refuse to give up the title of world champion for years. Iron Tigran born and raised in Tbilisi held the status of the world champion in 1963-1966.

Famous chess player Tigran Petrosian was born in Tbilisi in 1929, in an Armenian family. He learned playing chess at the Tiflis Palace of Pioneers under the tutelage of master Archil Ebralidze, whom he valued and respected greatly.

Petrosian’s first successful steps included vice-championship of Tbilisi and championship of Georgia. Later he won the Soviet championship four times and the World Chess Olympiad nine times

He was nicknamed Iron Tigran for his almost impenetrable defensive playing style. He is credited with popularizing chess in then-Soviet countries.
