The World University Service was established in Vienna in 1920, and the Council of Europe worked extensively with WUS in South East Europe in the 1990s and 2000s.

The conference marking WUS’ centenary (postponed for a year because of COVID) was held in Vienna on September 21 – 23, 2021 and focused on “the human right to quality education”. The Council of Europe played a prominent role in the program with the Head of the Council’s Education Department delivering a keynote on the human right to quality education as well as a presentation on “shrinking civic space and academic freedom”.
