The Council of Europe has recently published the Study on supporting quality journalism through media and information literacy prepared by the Committee of Experts on quality journalism in the digital age, rapporteurs Martina Chapman and Markus Oermann. The study analyses some 70 media and information literacy (MIL) projects aimed at developing MIL skills and knowledge that help the public to recognise and value quality journalism. Such skills include understanding how content is created, being able to distinguish between facts and opinions, understanding the role of the independent media in a democratic society or evaluating content for truthfulness and reliability, as well as knowledge about media regulation, the influence of technology on media choices or about managing personal data while using (social) media services. The study furthermore provides a selection of promising practices divided into five models, which can help MIL stakeholders including States in their development of future MIL programmes, strategies, materials, etc.
