Patrick Penninckx, Head of the Information Society Department of the Council of Europe intervened as a panellist in the online conference “Media Freedom in Bulgaria” on 12 October 2020. He reviewed media freedom trends on the European and regional scale and assessed the particular challenges faced by Bulgaria. The panellist further introduced the latest Council of Europe standards and tools to protect journalists, promote media pluralism, support quality journalism and address information disorder, fake news and hate speech, topics of particular relevance throughout Europe.
The conference organised by Euractiv, an independent pan-European media network specialised in EU policies, was equally addressed by Věra Jourová, Commission Vice President for Values and Transparency, members of the European Parliament, journalists and civil society representatives.
