How can the sustainability of quality news be ensured? Which are the responsibilities of actors such as online platforms, educators, regulators, civil society and academia with regard to preserving quality journalism?
To search for answers to these questions and to tackle other challenges that media face today, the Council of Europe and the Ministry of Culture of Slovenia are organising an international conference in Ljubljana on 28 and 29 November under the theme “(Last) call for quality journalism”.
The internet and digital technology have multiplied the number of news sources immediately accessible to the public, changing media consumption habits. This abundance of news sources, however, has not necessarily guaranteed a better quality nor more diverse information, whilst at the same time traditional quality media have struggled to remain financially sustainable.
The impact of social media platforms and manipulative websites in information practices is causing growing concern about the quality of the information that is reaching the public. In this context, the role of quality journalism remains crucial for democratic societies, by serving the public interest and promoting accountability in the public life.
The conference brings together 150 editors, self-regulatory bodies and regulators, academics, media lawyers, policymakers, media experts and journalists to exchange views on the current reality of news production, on the applicable standards and the way to make them effective in practice, and on ideas for possible policies to strengthen and support independent and quality journalism.
The Minister of Culture of Slovenia, Zoran Poznič, and the Head of the Information Society Department of the Council of Europe, Patrick Penninckx, opened the conference.
The conference is take place in the National Gallery of Slovenia in Ljubljana.
