JUFREX Study visit to media literacy center in Budapest

In the framework of the EU/CoE Joint Programme “Reinforcing Judicial Expertise on Freedom of Expression and the Media in South-East Europe (JUFREX)”, the Council of Europe in cooperation with the National Media and Infocommunication Authority of Hungary (NMHH) has organised a “Study visit to the Media literacy centre and NMHH headquarters in Budapest”, on 25 and 26 October 2018.

Participants, representatives of regulatory authorities for electronic media from Serbia, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina visited the Media literacy center “Magic Valley” which was created by the Hungarian regulator (NMHH) to support children in their conscious and safe media use.

With the new media landscape and use of the internet, users themselves have also become active content creators of the new media. This is a positive change offering many opportunities but also posing some risks. The media literacy center offers interactive and creative workshops for children and young people, raising their awareness and knowledge on how they are affected by the media and developing their understanding and critical approach towards various media contents. Also, this visit was an opportunity to discuss other NMHH projects and results and compare with the existent experiences in the South-East Europe.

The study visit presented examples of good practice relating to media literacy education, especially looking at the perspective and potential role of the regulatory authorities for electronic media.

This event has been implemented with the financial support of the EU and the Council of Europe. Attitudes and opinions presented do not necessarily reflect official attitudes of the European Union.
