The two-day training, in the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights related to privacy and data protection has gathered 20 participants from various departments of the State Inspector’s Service (national data protection authority).

During the training, the participants received information about the Strasbourg Court’s guiding principles when deciding upon cases involving privacy and data. The participants identified the most recent cases of the Court in their respective fields of expertise and analysed their own practices in the light of the case-law.

Some of the specific topics of discussion involved:

• Request of public information vs data protection;
• Databases run by respective public institutions and relevant procedural guarantees;
• Use of photo and video recording by investigatory bodies;
• Interrelation of freedom of expression and right to the private life

The training has been concluded by agreement to develop the reader – a compilation of most recent case-law on privacy and data protection specifically focusing on the above issues. The reader will be used primarily by the Institution’s analytical department to advise respective staff about relevant standards in each specific field of expertise.

The event was organised by the Council of Europe in co-operation with State Inspector’s Service under the Project “Supporting Freedom of Media and Internet in Georgia”.
