Back Greece: development of land and forest registries following ECHR judgments

During its meeting of 4 September, the Committee of Ministers decided to end the supervision of execution of six cases against Greece concerning property related issues (Nastou and Others, Papastavrou and Others).

In these cases, the Court had found various violations of the applicants’ right to property in the context of expropriation proceedings and land ownership disputes with the state.

Following the European Court’s judgments Greece adopted an array of measures to prevent similar violations, including the further development of the national land and forest registries. In addition, legislative changes were made notably establishing less stringent conditions for acquisition of land property by adverse possession against the state, while the highest administrative court aligned relevant case law with that of the Strasbourg Court.
