Back Launch of the Project “Strengthening Protection of Social and Economic Rights in Georgia”

Launch of the Project “Strengthening Protection of Social and Economic Rights in Georgia”

On 23 September, the Council of Europe Office in Georgia launched a new Project, “Strengthening protection of social and economic rights in Georgia”, through an online event. The Project will be implemented until the end of August 2022.

The event was attended by representatives of the Government, as well as international and local organisations, working on the promotion and the protection of social and economic rights.

The Project aims at reinforcing the respect for social rights in Georgia in line with the provisions of the European Social Charter. It envisages enhancing the capacities of Georgian authorities in delivering social rights and social services, as well as contributing to the alignment of the Georgian legislation (specifically in the area of labour rights) with the European standards.

Georgia ratified the Revised European Social Charter on 22 August 2005, accepting 63 of the Revised Charter’s 98 paragraphs. The main challenges identified by the European Committee on Social Rights (ECSR) in Georgia in the area of labour and employment rights relate to right to work, just conditions of work, fair remuneration, sexual and moral harassment at the workplace, and vocational training.

Christophe Poirel, Human Rights Director, Directorate General Human Rights and Rule of Law (DGI), Council of Europe, Ekaterine Tikaradze, Minister of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs and Natalia Voutova, Head of the Council of Europe Office in Georgia, delivered opening remarks.

The event was organised within the framework of the Council of Europe Project “Strengthening Protection of Social and Economic Rights in Georgia.” The Project is part of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Georgia 2020-2023.

The video of the event is available here.
