E-commerce and the right to data protection

UNCTAD’s eCommerce Week is the leading forum for Ministers, senior government officials, CEOs and other business representatives, international organisations, development banks, academics and civil society to discuss the development opportunities and challenges associated with the digital economy.

Under the theme “From Digitalization to Development”, this year’s edition of the eCommerce Week will in particular emphasise the need to break down silos -among institutions, government and policy areas- for an effective contribution of e-commerce towards sustainable development.

More than 1,300 participants from 120 countries are gathering this week, amid a new surge in global e-commerce sales, which grew by 13% to hit $29 trillion.

Is this jump distributed evenly at global level ? How to ensure an inclusive digital trade and development and how to guarantee that the human rights to privacy and data protection are fully taken into consideration in those discussions ?

The Head of the Data Protection Unit, Sophie Kwasny, is presenting the global data protection Convention (“Convention 108+”) and highlighting the necessary human right considerations to those reflections

In particular, she will be intervening in three sessions :
