Data protection in the mobile world

The Mobile World Congress (MWC) is being held on 25-27 February 2019 in Barcelona.

MWC is the largest mobile event in the world, bringing together the latest innovations and leading-edge technology from more than 2,400 companies, with a highly-rated conference programme assembling today’s visionaries to explore the hottest topics influencing the industry. This year, key decision-makers will discuss issues around the theme of the event: ‘Intelligent Connectivity’. The term is used to describe the powerful combination of flexible, high-speed 5G networks, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI) and big data. Intelligent connectivity will mark the beginning of a new era defined by highly contextualised and personalised experiences.

The Data Protection Unit joined the Ministerial Program and participated in the panel “Drilling Down into Data” tackling the main issues relating to international transfers of data. This event also provided an excellent opportunity to further discuss Council of Europe data protection standards and instruments with the key stakeholders during closed door roundtable discussions (Privacy in Africa, Cross-regulatory roundtable on the future of data privacy, China Roundtable on data protection and information security).
