Building a common legal space – a decade of joint action in the southern Mediterranean region

A regional conference marked the 10th anniversary of the South Programme, a joint initiative between the European Union and the Council of Europe, in Alicante, on 8 and 9 June. It took stock of the achievements and lessons learnt since the start of the South Programme in 2012 and was aiming to identify common trends and challenges in the Southern Mediterranean region with the objective of contributing towards defining priorities for future joint action.

Providing an opportunity for networking between representatives of authorities, members of parliament, professionals, civil society and young leaders in the Southern Mediterranean region and their peers in Europe, the conference promoted sharing of ideas and experiences to further strengthen the co-operation in priority thematic areas.

Personal data protection is one of the priority areas of the future programme (South V) that should start in September and run until December 2025. The southern mediterranean countries have different needs in that respect but they have recently shown a strong interest for the principles set out and up held by  Convention 108+.
