A high level study visit on the draft law on data protection of Belarus

A high level delegation has been invited to Strasbourg to discuss the draft law on data protection of the Republic of Belarus, on 14 and 15 May.

After several years of preparation, the draft law is now before the Parliament for examination.

The objective of the visit is to give three deputy-ministers present, representatives of the Parliament and of the presidential administration elements for the understanding of issues at stake in view of the examination and possible improvement of the draft text.

The Director of the National Centre for Legislation and Legal Research of the Republic of Belarus presented the draft law. The delegation is receiving information on and discussing Convention 108 and international standards on data protection, the case law of the European Court on Human Rights related to data protection, treaty accession procedures, as well as the experience of the Data Protection Office of Poland. The findings and recommendations of a legal analysis of the draft law carried out by an independent expert are being presented and discussed.

This visit will be followed by a field study visit to the Data Protection Office of Poland.
