42nd Plenary Meeting of the Committee of Convention 108

The Committee of Convention 108 held its 42nd plenary session from Wednesday 17 to Friday 19 November 2021, remotely.

On this last plenary meeting of the year, the Committee had the privilege to welcome – from far – the newly elected UN Special Rapporteur for Privacy, Dr. Ana Brian Nougrères. She exposed the priorities of her mandate and reiterated her interest to collaborate further with the Council of Europe and the Committee of Convention 108.

Some 100 participants from States Parties to Convention 108 and observers to the Committee met virtually to discuss and work on topical subjects concerning data protection. Notably, the Committee finalised and adopted Guidelines on the Protection of Individuals with regard to the Processing of Personal Data by and for Political Campaigns.

The Committee continued its work on crucial themes included in its work programme, notably digital identity, automatic transfers of data, contractual clauses in the context of transborder data flows, inter-state exchanges of data for Anti-Money Laundering/Countering Financing of Terrorism, and tax purposes etc.

Finally, Ms Camilla Tabarrini, 2020 winner of the Stefano Rodotà award, presented to the Committee the work for which she was distinguished, which the sanitary crisis didn’t enable her to do earlier.
