Back Stamp "30th anniversary of the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe"

Stamp

The first issue of a new postage stamp to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Cultural routes will be on sale at the Council of Europe Post Office (Strasbourg, France) on Friday 13 October from 10 am to 4 pm. It will be available online from Monday 16 October at www.laposte.fr/boutique

The 30 years of Cultural Routes will be illustrated on this stamp by the shell which represents the Santiago De Compostela Pilgrim Routes, the first cultural route to be certified in 1987, and three other photos, symbolising gastronomy (The Olive Tree Routes), the cultural landscape (The Prehistoric Rock Art Trail ) and architecture (The Cluniac Sites in Europe).

Launched in 1987, the certification "Cultural Route of the Council of Europe" guarantees the excellence of transnational networks showcasing routes of historical, cultural, heritage and social importance. There are currently more than 30 certified cultural routes crossing some fifty countries and thousands of towns and cities. They highlight the wealth and diversity of our common European heritage and are all invitations to travel while gaining knowledge about subjects as varied as art, architecture, religious influences, gastronomy and landscape, and also prominent European figures.

The programme is supported by the member states of the Enlarged Partial Agreement on Cultural Routes, established by the Council of Europe in 2010, and by the European Institute of Cultural Routes, set up in 1998 as part of a political agreement between the Council of Europe and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
