An online presentation of the Corruption risk assessment (CRA) of the Moroccan banking sector was held on 23 September 2021 in the framework of the project on Promotion of good governance: Fight against corruption and money laundering in the Southern Mediterranean (SNAC 4). SNAC 4 project is part of the joint programme between the European Union and the Council of Europe "Regional Support to Reinforce Human Rights, Rule of Law and Democracy in the Southern Mediterranean" (South Programme IV).

Representatives of the Central Bank of Morocco (BKAM), commercial banks and National Authority for Probity, Prevention, and the Fight against Corruption (INPPLC) got familiarised with the findings and recommendations of the CRA as well as with international good practice.

The CRA provides the first sectorial risk assessment of the banking sector in Morocco and serves the Moroccan banks and their supervisors with the possible corruption risks scenarios they could face when providing their services and products as well as with recommendations on how to prevent, manage and mitigate these risks.

The CRA was carried out, upon request of the INPPLC and BKAM, under the previous phase of the project (SNAC 3) and was finalised under the current phase. It will serve for further development of a risk-based approach in the prevention of corruption in the banking sector as well as to nurture the good cooperation, established during the assessment process, between BKAM and INPPLC.

Following the CRA, the Council of Europe will further support the Moroccan banking sector in strengthening the corruption prevention system as well as in managing corruption risks.
