SDG Summit: “Involving cities and regions in the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals”

EU Commissioners Karmenu Vella and Neven Mimica informed the global community, on 18 July 2019, on how the Agenda 2030 on sustainable development was being implemented by the European Union, on the occasion of the United-Nations High Level Political Forum in New-York.

Congress President Anders Knape and Secretary General Andreas Kiefer used the opportunity to speak with several European co-ordinators to include the cities and regions in the upcoming voluntary national reviews about the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The next important step will be the Summit of Heads of State and Government at the United Nations Headquarters on 24 and 25 September 2019 in New York to follow up and comprehensively review progress in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Goals. The event is the first UN summit on the SDGs since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda in September 2015.

"We, in the Congress, expect decisions and action and full involvement of the cities and regions in the drafting and implementation," Anders Knape underlined.

The Congress' approach to the Sustainable Development Goals is based on three key principles: achieving SDGs is the shared responsibility of all levels of government; local and regional authorities must have the necessary competences and financial autonomy to achieve the goals in their respective areas; citizens must always remain at the heart of the action.
