Beja is a municipality in the Alentejo Region in Southern Portugal with a population of 35,734 inhabitants. It is the capital of both the District of Beja composed of 14 municipalities and the Region of Baixo Alentejo.

The most important ethnic group – the Portuguese population – represents 73 per cent of the municipality’s inhabitants. Regular migrants account for 3.5% of the total population, the largest minority group being Roma (1.73%) followed by Brazilians, Ukrainians, Moldovans and Romanians. According to the answers provided in the ICC index questionnaire, there are other unrecorded migrant groups in Beja.
