3rd Workshop on Family Mediation

The 3rd family mediation workshop was organised in Ankara on 15-16 May 2017 to examine legislative framework of the family mediation in Turkey in line with the Council of Europe, CEPEJ Guidelines (CEPEJ (2007)14 for a better implementation of the Recommendation Rec (98)1 on family mediation) and the EU Mediation Directive dated 2008. The national participants were pilot judges from family courts in pilot jurisdictions, mediators, academicians, the NGOs, and the representatives from the Court of Cassation, the Regional Court of Appeals, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Family and Social Policies. With the support of a CEPEJ Expert and a family mediator from a service provider in Germany, the participants explored the legal framework of family mediation and how to regulate family mediation process, and training of family mediators, family mediators’ background and qualifications. By the end of the workshop, several recommendations have been adopted on the organisation and legal framework of the family mediation scheme in Turkey, which are expected to be pursued by the decision and policy makers for the development and dissemination of mediation.

This workshop was organised in the scope of the Project on Developing Mediation Practices in Civil Disputes in Turkey, implemented by the Council of Europe.
