The European Union

Combating sexual violence against children is part of the European Union (EU) action and policy in the criminal justice field, and in which the EU has contributed notably to harmonizing EU law and legal standards, thus ensuring common interpretations and implementation.

To combat sexual abuse, sexual exploitation of children and child pornography, an important proposal for a directive, which builds on the European conventions, is currently under negotiation.

Another important recent intitiative to protect children from sexual violence is a proposal for a directive for preventing and combating trafficking in human beings and protecting victims of trafficking.
