Valerio Prignachi says protecting gay and lesbian rights is protecting equality and democracy

Strasbourg, 27.03.2007 - ''The rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals (LGBT) to freedom of expression and assembly are essential not only to their own individual development but also to the promotion and protection of the principles of equality and democracy'', Valério Prignachi declared when presenting the draft resolution and recommendation on the subject to the Congress.

These texts were drafted following violations of LGBT rights in Council of Europe member states. Amongst other things they remind authorities of their obligation to restrict freedom of peaceful assembly only as a last resort, and to take the necessary steps to make sure gatherings are allowed to proceed in peace.
