30 years after the Madrid Convention: Congress to set new priorities for transfrontier co-operation in Europe

Karl-Heinz Lambertz, Belgium, President of the Association of European Border Regions and Chairman of the Congress Governance Committee marked today, in the frame of the 21st Congress Session, the achievements of the Framework Convention on Transfrontier Co-operation, signed in Madrid, which entered into force 30 years ago, in 1981. Transfrontier co-operation between territorial authorities so as to promote democratic stability and good neighbour relations between states and territorial authorities remains a fundamental political mission of the Council of Europe, Mr Lambertz stated.

Karl-Heinz Lambertz, Belgique, Président de l’Association des régions frontalières européennes et Président de la Commission de la Gouvernance du Congrès, a souligné, à l’occasion de la 21ème Session du Congrès, les acquis de la Convention-Cadre sur la Coopération transfrontalière, signée à Madrid et entrée en vigueur il y a 30 ans. La coopération transfrontalière entre collectivités territoriales – qui vise à promouvoir la stabilité démocratique et les relations de bon voisinage entre Etats et collectivités territoriales - reste une mission politique fondamentale du Conseil de l'Europe, a déclaré Mr. Lambertz.
