Digital Conference on February 18: Unboxing Hate Speech – European Impulses for Respect and Solidarity on the Web

Online hate speech poses a growing threat to our democracies. It violates human rights, corrodes solidarity and the culture of debate. What can European political institutions and civil society do to counter hatred, exclusion and verbal violence while also defending freedom of speech? What part does the Council of Europe play as custodian of human rights and democracy? What experiences have been gained in the individual member states?

A high-level conference involving politicians, civil society actors, and tech industry representatives will unpack online hate speech and discuss counter-strategies. Jointly organised by the German Federal Foreign Office, the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection, and the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, the event is part of Germany’s presidency in the Committee of Ministers.

The conference will be livestreamed at this website on February 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (CET). A full programme is available on the same website.
