Law enforcement and race in Europe

Interview with ECRI Vice Chair Domenica Ghidei Biidu
9'40" 15 June 2020 Council of Europe Strasbourg

The Council of Europe's Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) has issued recommendations to governments in Europe, to improve the way that police forces respond to the sensitive issue of race and law enforcement. ECRI proposes more police officers from minority groups, better training so that police are made aware of the human rights dimension of their work, and independent bodies who can impartially investigate complaints. These measures, says ECRI, will increase public trust in the police.

Domenica Ghidei Biddu is a Vice Chair of ECRI and Deputy Human Rights Commissioner of the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights, based in Utrecht, Netherlands.
