Seminar on the Congress’ history, achievements and prospects on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Council of Europe

On the occasion of the celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the Council of Europe, the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities organised a “Seminar on the history and role of the Congress in Europe” on 1 October 2019. It brought together the former Congress presidents and the current Bureau members and it was the occasion to hear the former presidents’ opinions on the Congress’ current developments. The seminar was opened by the President, Anders Knape. At the end of the seminar, the Congress delegation watched the speech by Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, at the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, before taking part in the official ceremony for the 70th anniversary of the Council of Europe.

The Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe celebrated its 25th anniversary last June in Brussels, together with the European Committee of Regions of the European Union. The Congress was established in its current form in 1994 following a decision made by the heads of State and government of the member states of the Council of Europe who met in Vienna in 1993.
