Open local government: Congress and the Association of Ukrainian cities organise online marathon

On 19 May 2021, Ukrainian local authorities presented good practices on open government at the online marathon organised jointly by the Congress and the Association of Ukrainian Cities (AUC) as part of the 2021 edition of the Open Gov Week held under the motto “Respond. Recover. Renew.”

On this occasion, Congress Secretary General Andreas Kiefer highlighted the need for strong partnerships in building effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels, in particular in the context of the current public health crisis.

Mayor of the Capital City of Kyiv and AUC President Vitaliy Klitschko stressed that local and regional authorities must lead as the actors of change in their communities, by providing new and improved services to their residents, new facilities or better living conditions.

Ukrainian mayors and councillors demonstrated their proactive stand in leading inclusive, diverse and gender-balanced initiatives and presented concrete measures to improve citizen participation and respond to and recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

This event is organised within the project "Strengthening democracy and building trust at local level in Ukraine implemented by the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities within the Council of Europe Action Plan for Ukraine 2018‑2022. The project aims to improve the quality of local democracy in Ukraine by strengthening institutional frameworks and by supporting local authorities and their national associations in their efforts to promote ethical decision-making and more citizen-oriented, inclusive and transparent local governance.
