De vlag met een cirkel van gouden sterren tegen een azuurblauwe achtergrond staat symbool voor eenheid. Het aantal sterren blijft onveranderd: twaalf is het getal van perfectie en compleetheid en doet herinneren aan de twaalf apostelen, de twaalf zonen van Jacob, de twaalf werken van Herakles, de twaalf maanden van het jaar, enzovoorts.

De Raad van Europa besefte al direct in 1949 dat Europa behoefte had aan een symbool waarmee burgers zich zouden kunnen identificeren. Op 25 oktober 1955 ging de Parlementaire Vergadering unaniem akkoord met het embleem bestaande uit een cirkel van gouden sterren tegen een blauwe achtergrond. Op 9 december 1955 keurde het Comité van Ministers de vlag goed. Op 13 december van datzelfde jaar werd die vervolgens in Parijs officieel gepresenteerd.

Een symbool voor heel Europa

In 1983 keurde ook het Europees Parlement de door de Raad van Europa ontworpen vlag goed. Het deed ook de aanbeveling er het embleem van heel Europa van te maken. De Europese Raad keurde dat in 1985 goed. De instellingen van de Europese Unie gebruiken de vlag sinds 1986.

De Europese vlag staat sindsdien symbool voor een gemeenschappelijk politiek project dat alle Europeanen verenigt en hun diversiteit overstijgt.

(a) the use creates the incorrect impression or assumption that there is a connection between the user and any of the institutions, bodies, offices, agencies and organs of the European Union or the Council of Europe;

(b) the use leads the public to believe erroneously that the user benefits from the support, sponsorship, approval or consent of any of the institutions, bodies, offices, agencies and organs of the European Union or the Council of Europe;

(c) the use is in connection with any objective or activity which is incompatible with the aims and principles of the European Union or of the Council of Europe, or which would be otherwise unlawful.

Trade mark and related issues

The use of the European emblem in accordance with the conditions in the previous section does not mean consent to registration of the emblem or an imitation thereof as a trade mark or any other IP right. The European Commission ([email protected]) and the Council of Europe ([email protected]) will continue the monitoring of applications for registration of the European emblem or part thereof as (part of) IP rights, in accordance with the applicable legal provisions.
