Case Law Analysis Workshop for an improved training needs assessment

On 5 June 2017, the staff of the High School of Justice of Georgia benefited from a one-day workshop on Case Law Analysis at the School's premises in Tbilisi. The School aims at introducing the case law analysis in its judicial training needs assessment applied for designing training for judges.

The workshop was led by Mr Julian Lonbay and Ms Eka Lomtatidze, experts for the Council of Europe. Participants benefited from a session on principles and methods of case law analysis, as well as a presentation on a pilot case law analysis, the topic for which was workplace discrimination. This enabled a detailed discussion on the methodology and findings of this pilot case law analysis. It also provided lessons learned for future application through case studies.

As a result of the transfer of knowledge on tools and methods on case law analysis, the Analytical Department of the School is prepared to take this initiative further, in preparation of their working visit to the Estonian Supreme Court, planned to take place on 14-15 June, on their experience with case law analysis for judicial training purposes.

The activity was organised within the framework of the Council of Europe Project “Strengthening the capacity of the High School of Justice of Georgia”. This Project is funded by voluntary contributions of Bulgaria, Liechtenstein, Norway, Slovakia and Sweden to support the implementation of the Council of Europe Action plan for Georgia 2016-2019.
