Online training session on “Protection of Human Rights in Mental Health Services’’ under the Project on ‘‘Human Rights Protection in Biomedicine’’ in Armenia

Online training session on the topic of ‘Protection of Human Rights in Mental Health Services’’ was organised on 27 January 2022 for 50 participants of HELP roll-out groups of legal and healthcare professionals of Armenia launched in October 2021. The training session was requested by the HELP roll-out groups consisting of lawyers and physicians working in the mental health organizations.

The training was dedicated to the presentation of European standards on protection of human rights in biomedicine, including mental health enshrined by the Oviedo Convention. The training session was opened by Ms Laurence Lwoff, the Head of Bioethics Unit of the Council of Europe who has presented the work of Bioethics Unit in the field of protection of human rights in the area of mental health care services.

The substantial presentation on the ‘’Overview of the ECHR case-law with regard to mental health’’ was made by Mr. Vasily Lukashevich, Senior Lawyer at the Registry of the European Court of Human Rights and Legal Advisor in the Directorate General Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe.

The substantial presentations were followed by active discussion on the topics and comparisons with the Armenian legislation in the field.

The Training session was organised in the frameworks of the Council of Europe’s Project on ‘‘Protection of Human Rights in Biomedicine’’ in Armenia.
