On 3-6 April, the Liberation Route Europe (LRE) Foundation, in partnership with Normandy Tourism and Région Normandie, hosted the LRE Forum 2022 in Caen, France. The LRE Forum is an annual event bringing together international members, partners, and tourism stakeholders from the World War II remembrance sector, to network, hear updates from experts, and attend specialised travel trade events.

At the invitation of Mr. Rémi PRAUD, President of the Liberation Route Europe, Ms. Catherine HANNEQUART (EPA Secretariat) presented the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe programme to the members of the LRE, focusing on the benefits of being part of a certified Cultural Route of the Council of Europe.

Following the seminar, a Conference was held on the role of remembrance as a tool for citizenship and its impact on today’s world. Mr. Alain LAMASSOURE, Chairman of the Observatory on History Teaching in Europe (Council of Europe) and former Minister and Member of the European Parliament, opened the conference with a keynote speech on “Teaching and learning history in Europe: an instrument of Peace?”. A selection of academic speakers and experts then discussed the role of the remembrance within modern society and its potential as a tool for education.

The Liberation Route Europe, certified in 2019, has extended its membership and achieved an admirable list of projects, including thematic Routes, hiking trails and a digital trip planner.
