Council of Europe expert advisory group starts its work supporting Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Office

The Council of Europe’s Directorate General Human Rights and Rule of Law has set up an expert advisory group to support the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine. This initiative is part of its immediate assistance to Ukraine following Russia’s aggression, and follows initial consultations between Secretary General Marija Pejčinović Burić and the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, Iryna Venediktova.

The group includes Jeremy McBride a barrister at Monckton Chambers in the United Kingdom and Nona Tsotsoria, former judge of the European Court of Human Rights, and former Deputy Chief Prosecutor of Georgia. The advisory group has started providing strategic-level expert advice to the Prosecutor General and her Office as part of the process of investigating gross human rights violations in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine relating to European human rights standards and international humanitarian law.
