“On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, I reaffirm Iceland’s steadfast commitment to gender equality and the protection of the hard-earned progress concerning the human rights of women and girls. Together, we must combat all forms of violence against women and girls everywhere, always. Unfortunately, it is the most pervasive human rights violation around the world and occurs in all Member States of the Council of Europe. While important gains in the fight against gender-based violence have been made over decades of activism, new forms of violence have however emerged.
“During our Presidency, Iceland will have a special focus on action against digital violence. As a part of our Presidency, we will actively engage in the campaign of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence starting today that aims to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls. To demonstrate our solidarity in eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls, the Icelandic Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Reykjavik and Icelandic embassies around the world will be lit up in orange during the 16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. This is done in connection with the Orange Day by the UNiTE to End Violence against Women Campaign on 25 November. The colour orange symbolizes a brighter future, free of violence.
“I encourage everyone to get involved during these 16 days – and every day. I am committed in doing my part. During our Presidency we will also emphasise the importance of awareness raising on the various forms of violence against women and girls. Together with other delegations in Strasbourg, the Permanent Representation of Iceland will organise a social media campaign to highlight the positive impact of the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence (Istanbul Convention) at the national level.
