Youth work promotes gender equality

Gender equality has been a concern for the youth sector of the Council of Europe ever since its creation. The promotion of gender equality and combating any form of gender-based discrimination or gender inequality are at the heart of the Youth for Democracy programme of the Council of Europe. Youth organisations, in particular, have consistently contributed to keep theme up to date in the programme of activities of the European Youth Centres.

The study session “Education and training of youth workers in Europe today” organised in cooperation with the European Confederation of Youth Clubs - ECYC, started today on 8 March. The activity looks at frameworks for education and training for youth workers, based on the Council of Europe’s Recommendation on Youth Work and the European Youth Work Agenda. Youth work is an important tool to promote gender equality, and work on non-discrimination of women and girls, the team of the study session has dedicated several discussion points which explored gender equality in youth work.

On the 8 March, youth workers call for more spaces, means, support and opportunities for young women and girls to have access to their rights. Youth work has different tools and resources to raise awareness about the inequalities and motivate young people to challenge gender based discrimination.
