3rd Steering Committee meeting of the Council of Europe Project “Strengthening Protection of Social and Economic Rights in Georgia”

The Council of Europe Project “Strengthening Protection of Social and Economic Rights in Georgia” held its 3rd Steering Committee meeting on Friday, 28 October 2022 in person.

Participants were informed about the activities carried out in the field of labour rights during the first phase of the Project. The Project team was pleased to announce the successful extension of the Project through December 2023 and presented the activities planned for the remainder of the Project duration. All beneficiaries and stakeholders present reiterated their readiness to cooperate with the Council of Europe and more specifically with this Project to further enhance the protection of social rights in Georgia.

The meeting was opened by Tamar Nozadze, Senior Project Officer and Margarita Galstyan, Project Manager at the Council of Europe. The meeting was also attended by Ms Lika Klimiashvili, Head of Labour Relations and Social Partnership Division, Ministry of Internally Displaced Persons from the Occupied Territories, Labour, Health and Social Affairs, Ms Tamar Gvaramadze, First Deputy Public Defender of Georgia, Ms Nato Natenadze, First Deputy Chief Inspector of the Labour Inspection Office, as well as other local and international stakeholders and beneficiaries.

The Project started in March 2021 for a period of 18 months with a budget of 350,000 EUR. It was initially to be concluded at the end of August 2022 but considering the identified needs and priorities, it was instead extended into its second phase until the end of December 2023 with a total budget of 700,500 EUR. The Project aims at aligning national legislation and practice with European social and economic rights standards, policies and practices, providing for proper protection and implementation of social rights and enhancing knowledge and capacity among target groups in promoting and protecting social rights in line with European standards and best practices.

The event was organised within the framework of the Council of Europe Project “Strengthening Protection of Social and Economic Rights in Georgia.” The Project is part of the Council of Europe Action Plan for Georgia 2020-2023.
